I but bought a fantastic vintage wool coat off of eBay, only the seller neglected to mention it stank of mold.

Will dry cleaning kill the mold spores in the glaze?
I'yard not just talking about removing the smell, but killing the actual spores, then at that place's no chance of them proliferating again.

Anyone have any feel with something like this?

I'm non just talking about removing the smell, just killing the actual spores, then there's no chance of them proliferating again.

Quality dry cleaning should do all that! But go for a full service...not the budget treatment some offer.

Whatever chance to go out the coat in sunlight for while?

I'd personally go rid of it. Mold spreads and can be unsafe to your wellness. I wouldn't let information technology in my house. If you lot are determined to clean it then I would utilize vinegar initially to soak it iii/4 in the wash. then dry out in the dominicus within and out. uv kills the spores. and so echo if necessary. if smell persists use smell absorbing elements like, baking soda, charcoal, kitty litter outside in the dominicus in a clear container.

@JanSolo: I took it to a mom and pop dry cleaner I've been using for years. I spoke to two different people there, who gave me alien prospective outcomes. I person said she was "98% sure" that they could have care of it. The other was more pessimistic. Equally it's winter hither, nosotros're non getting a lot of UV rays, but someone with a scientific discipline groundwork bodacious me that if I left it outside in beneath-freezing temperatures it would kill the mold spores. (She also said that the intense oestrus of dry cleaning would do the trick equally well.)

@Sillyrib: Getting rid of information technology, of grade, would exist the only definite fashion to avoid the proliferation of mold. However, the rarity of the coat is prompting me to recollect irrationally and tempting me to keep information technology. When I get it back from the cleaner, I'll call back about the vinegar treatment...

I in one case had a pretty bad experience getting sick because of mold, so I'm a trivial torn here. I don't want to run a risk a repeat of that situation....but it'due south a damned amazing glaze...

Thank you both for your suggestions.

It will be as good as new once it's been properly dry cleaned. The gaseous/liquid aliphatic compounds i. e. Cyclobutane etc. will conciliate/destroy and remove all mold spores. The bad smell will also exist gone later on dry out cleaning... Think: Full service. Maybe you will have to repeat that but chemical dry cleaning is the style to go.

It will be every bit skilful as new once it'southward been properly dry cleaned. The gaseous/liquid aliphatic compounds i. east. Cyclobutane etc. will deactivate/destroy and remove all mold spores. The bad smell will also exist gone after dry cleaning... Remember: Full service. Maybe you will take to repeat that but chemical dry cleaning is the way to go.

You lot know, not more than a moment ago, I was willing to get rid of it. Just you're tipping the scales the other way. I call back I'll become it cleaned twice and hope for the best. Maybe sequester it from my other clothing.

(Yet, a Science teacher just told me that dry cleaning won't impale the dormant spores...)

It's a shame the previous owner didn't take intendance of it. You'd like information technology JS (I saw your mail service with your leather trim work), it's a surplus Duffel Coat. With very dense, heavy wool. No thought how old information technology is, simply photos of Duffel Coats in action don't do it justice. This matter is like armor.

We'll see. I become information technology back from the dry cleaner adjacent week and I'll go from there.

My vintage horsehide half-belt has a singled-out musty smell about it merely I tin't meet whatsoever evidence of mold on the exterior. What would be the best treatment for this? Would dry out cleaning be out of the question?

Unfortunately dry cleaners are NOT the best solution for mold removal! I had my vintage navy pea glaze came back from the dry cleaner and in 3 months I had to bring it dorsum once again! While I'g writing this mail, my pea coat is sitting direct in the lord's day! My local dry cleaner brash me never to store jackets in plastic bags considering wet tin exist trapped inside the handbag, which could crusade mold easily!!

It'southward mould, not plutonium. Dry cleaning volition kill anything - including the fabric if it's not done properly.

I've spoken with iii different dry cleaners. Each of them basically said the aforementioned thing: They couldn't guarantee they could go rid of all the mold. Two were optimistic, one was...less so. We'll run into.

I also read well-nigh the recommendation not to store apparel in dry out cleaner numberless. Information technology has something to do with the fabric non being able to "outgas".
